Watching FOX 5, you may not realize how pioneering this station was. WTTG was one of the first television stations in the world. FOX 5 began operations on May 19, 1945, as the first station in Washington, D.C., and the second station of the now defunct DuMont television network.The station was known as W3XWT: "W" stood for North America, "3" for the country region, "X" stood for experimental, and "WT" for station call signs. The radio station was owned by DuMont Labs, a manufacturer of television sets and transmitting equipment. Founder Allen Dumont saw the television station as a great way to sell more DuMont brand televisions. "
